Linear Gate Motor Replacement: The Sacramento Owner’s Guide

Linear gate motor replacement in Sacramento typically runs between $650 and $1,450 installed, depending on which Linear operator series you have and whether the arm, transformer, or control board needs replacing at the same time. We stock Linear-compatible motors, arms, and control boards on our service trucks, so most replacements happen same-day once we diagnose the machine. Most Sacramento owners first notice the gate either stops responding from the remote, grinds against the stop instead of closing smoothly, or cycles partway and reverses. Some catch it earlier when the motor hums but the gate won’t budge, or when a warning beep comes from the control box as the gate starts to drift. If that matches what you’re seeing, this page will walk you through identifying the right part, understanding the real cost, and getting it swapped without surprises.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear gate operators break into a few series that share motors but not always the same mounting pattern or arm travel length. The most common in Sacramento are the Linear LDCO800 and LDCO1200 lines (swing gates), the linear actuator models LRA and LCA (slide gates), and the older Pro Access series that pops up on 1990s-built homes. Before we order or pull anything, we match the motor by the data plate on the operator body or control box. That plate gives the model, serial range, and horsepower, and that is the part number ecosystem you need. Swapping an LDCO800 motor into an LDCO1200 machine simply does not work even though both look similar on the outside. On older Pro Access units, Linear changed the motor coupler design mid-production, so a motor from a 2007 unit and one from a 2012 unit are not interchangeable even if the model number is the same. OEM Linear parts are good quality, and for the motor itself, we almost always recommend staying with Linear rather than an aftermarket equivalent, because the aftermarket motors we’ve tested in this category tend to run hotter, which shortens lifespan in Sacramento’s 90-plus degree summer conditions. For control boards and limit switches, we have aftermarket options we trust and will tell you when one makes sense and when it doesn’t, and we show you both prices before ordering anything.

Signs Your Linear Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • Gate hums but doesn’t move. The motor is receiving power and trying to turn, but the drive coupler or internal gears have stripped. On Linear swing operators this usually shows up first as a gate that closes but then drifts open again because the motor can’t hold tension.
  • Gate stops mid-cycle and reverses. The linear arm has worn bushings, so it’s stalling out and sending a false obstruction signal back to the board. We see this often on LDCO units that have run north of 8,000 cycles.
  • Remote works intermittently, then stops. The motor is drawing too much current as it degrades, which trips the safety circuit and resets the board. By the time you’re pressing the remote four times, the winding insulation has likely broken down.
  • Grinding, clicking, or a fast “chunk-chunk-chunk” sound from the operator body. The worm-driven gear set inside the motor housing is worn, and the motor shaft is jumping instead of meshing. On slide gate Linear actuators, this presents as the gate pausing repeatedly along its travel length.
  • Gate can be pushed open by hand with the operator engaged. The motor has lost holding torque, which is the most common early sign before full failure. It also happens right before a Linear motor seizes, so catching it at this stage usually saves you from a locked gate.

We regularly see these failures in East Sacramento, Land Park, and Carmichael, where gates get heavy use with multiple daily cycles. In Greenhaven and along the river, the older Pro Access operators on long driveways have hit their end of service life and one bad motor often points to an arm that is not far behind. Cody Beckman and their team check both when the motor fails, because replacing a motor while leaving a worn linear arm is just delaying a second bill.

Every quote is written and agreed before any work starts. The number quoted is the number you pay, and if we find something else wrong while the gate is apart, we stop and show you. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every part and labor we install, so if anything we replaced fails within that window, we’re back to make it right with no argument and no invoice. We replace the motor, the coupler or arm if worn, and we test the full travel and safety settings before we call the job done.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do some diagnosis yourself: check whether the breaker for the gate is on, look for the small red fault light on the control board, and see whether the gate moves freely when you pull the manual release. Those three checks tell us a lot and they cost you nothing. What you should not do is open and attempt a Linear gear motor swap on your own. Line voltage runs into the operator enclosure, the swing arm is under mechanical load, and the motor coupler on Linear units is easy to damage just enough that it fails weeks later. A broken gate motor is not worth a trip to urgent care. If you want to know what specifically failed before committing to any repair, call us at (279) 266-8501 and we’ll come out, open it up, and show you the part that failed. You’ll get a written price either way, and a clean work area regardless of whether the gate is fixed same-day or scheduled.
