Linear access control installation in Sacramento typically runs $450 to $1,400 installed, depending on whether you’re replacing a keypad, adding a telephone entry system, or wiring in a full card reader setup at a driveway gate. We stock Linear-compatible access control parts on our trucks and can usually have a failed keypad or blown controller board diagnosed and replaced same-day in most Sacramento neighborhoods. Most owners discover the problem the same way: the keypad stopped reading codes, the intercom buzzes instead of talking, or the gate opens fine from the remote but won’t respond to anything at the keypad.
If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance your Linear keypad is dead to the world, or the access control board keeps clicking without ever opening the gate. The good news is these systems are repairable far more often than they need to be replaced. The better news is you called a specialist who works on Linear equipment every week, not a general contractor who last touched an access control board when the Clippers were still in San Diego.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear’s access control line splits into a few families, and matching the right part comes down to one thing: what generation your system is. If you have a blue-faced keypad with a metal housing, you’re running an AK-11, AK-21, or AK-31 series. If you have a newer gray or black keypad with a plastic face, it’s likely from the AKR or AP series, which use a different wiring harness than the older AK line. The telephone entry systems we see most in Sacramento are the AE-500, AE-1000, and the older AE-100, which are all modular enough that a single relay failure shouldn’t mean a full replacement.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips people up: many Linear keypads from the AK series share a housing but use different board pinouts. Plugging an AK-11 board into an AK-21 harness will fry the relay on power-up. We check the label and the connector spacing before we wire anything. In Sacramento’s summer heat, we see more failed electrolytic capacitors and dry solder joints on Linear boards than on any other brand we service. The boards sit in metal housings that bake in direct sun, and a couple of consecutive 105-degree Julys will age a board like five years of normal use.
Latch and Post Gate Repair Sacramento is an independent gate specialist and is not affiliated with Linear or Nortek Control. We’ll happily install OEM Linear parts, but where there’s a reliable aftermarket equivalent that saves you money without changing the wiring or the function, we’ll tell you what it is and what it costs. You pick; we install.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad board is reading your code, but the relay that sends voltage to the gate operator isn’t closing. Usually a bad relay or a cracked solder joint on the back of the board. This one is repairable in about 20 minutes with a quality relay swap.
- Codes work intermittently. You type the code, nothing happens, you type it again and the gate opens. This is almost always a failing power supply or a loose terminal connection. The board isn’t getting steady voltage, and it behaves like a car with a dying alternator.
- All codes stopped working overnight. When every code fails at once, it’s rarely a programming problem. Look for a dead transformer, a tripped breaker, or water intrusion in the keypad housing. Sacramento’s wet winters get into older keypads through cracked gaskets, and the board corrodes from the bottom up.
- Keypad flashes or the intercom hums loudly. A Linear keypad that lights up but won’t program, or a telephone entry system that hums instead of carrying voice, usually points to a failing capacitor on the power rail. The board is getting enough juice to light up but not enough to operate the relay or the speaker circuit.
- The telephone entry unit rings but won’t open the gate. The relaying unit on AE-series telephone entry panels has a finite number of cycles. When it dies, callers get through on audio but the open command never reaches the operator. That relay is replaceable, and we keep them on the truck.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Sacramento, expect to pay:
- Single keypad replacement (AK series, part and labor): $350 to $650
- Telephone entry system replacement (AE series, part and labor): $800 to $1,400
- Access control board repair (soldering, relay or capacitor replacement): $150 to $300
- Wiring or transformer replacement: $150 to $400, depending on the trench or wall run
Every quote includes the part, the labor, the wiring check, and a written price before we touch anything. We’re one of the few gate companies in Sacramento that will repair a board rather than automatically quote you a whole new system, because Cody Beckman, our owner, would rather see a $40 repair be the end of it than sell you a $900 panel you didn’t need. That’s the way we do business, and it’s the same whether we’re in Elk Grove, Fair Oaks, or the Pocket-Greenhaven area along the river bend.
All access control work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the keypad fails or the board gives out within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge, no fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
Access control work touches low voltage, but there’s one honest caution: a Linear keypad wired into the gate operator’s main terminal block can carry 120V at the power input. If you’re not comfortable testing for live voltage before you handle the wires, that’s not a task to learn on the fly. You can safely check the breaker, the transformer, and whether the keypad has visible water inside the housing. What you shouldn’t do is start poking around the board with a multimeter unless you know exactly which terminal carries what.
Beyond the electrical risk, most DIY Linear repairs fail because the part you order online isn’t the right generation for your system. We’ve had more than one Sacramento homeowner hand us a brand-new AK series board that was meant for a different harness. We fix that, too, but it’s cheaper to call us before you order $180 in frustration. Call (279) 266-8501 and we’ll help you identify what you actually have.
FAQs
In the Sacramento area, a Linear keypad or entry panel typically lasts 8 to 12 years, but boards mounted in direct afternoon sun with no shade often fail in 6 to 8 years. Our hot, dry summers bake the capacitors and dry out the solder joints faster than coastal California climates. If yours is older than a decade and giving you trouble, it’s usually more economical to replace than to repair. Call (279) 266-8501 for an honest assessment, free estimate included.
Yes, in many cases we repair Linear boards in place, replacing relays, capacitors, and cracked solder joints for $150 to $300. If the board has water damage or burned traces, replacement is the smarter long-term fix. We’ll show you the trouble spots on the board before we recommend either path, and you’ll get the price in writing before any work starts.
A keypad swap in a Sacramento home gate usually takes 45 to 90 minutes, including testing your codes and confirming the operator opens and closes cleanly. Telephone entry system installations take 2 to 3 hours depending on the wall work and phone wiring. We’ll give you a time window and the exact cost before we start, so you’re never surprised.
Yes, we keep Linear AK-series keypads, AE-series telephone entry components, relays, transformers, and common board repair parts stocked on our trucks for same-day repair across Sacramento. If we need a specific board we’ll have it ordered by the next morning, and we’ll give you a loaner keypad if it’s a safety issue while we wait.
Ready to get your Linear access control system working again? Call (279) 266-8501. A live person picks up, day or night. We’ll ask what your keypad is doing, figure out what you likely have, and get you a free estimate with no pressure. Shoe covers on, drop cloths down, and a cleanup photo before we leave, every single visit. A gate that works quietly is one you stop thinking about, that’s exactly where we want to leave it.
