BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement: The Sacramento Owner’s Guide

BFT hinge and roller replacement in Sacramento typically runs $160 – $420 installed, depending on whether we’re swapping a single hinge, a roller pair, or the full set on both gate leaves. We stock BFT-compatible hinges and rollers on our trucks, so most Sacramento calls are completed same-day. Owners usually discover the problem the way you’d expect: the gate starts dragging, squealing, or binding at one corner, and after a season or two of Sacramento sun and the occasional wet winter, the polished movement BFT gates are known for turns into something that sounds like a filing cabinet full of gravel.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT’s residential and light-commercial swing gates share hinge geometry across several series lines, including the Deimos, Phobos, Sub, and Giuno series, as well as the older Kustos and Tiziano models still running in Sacramento’s established neighborhoods. The hinges come in two mounting patterns: welded-on (common on steel gates paired with BFT operators) and bolt-through (typical for the aluminum and ornamental gates we see in Pocket-Greenhaven and Land Park).

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that matters when you’re price-shopping or trying to source your own part: BFT hinge barrels are metric. A hinge that looks identical from the outside may have a 20mm barrel where BFT uses 22mm, or a 10mm pin where BFT uses 12mm. We measure the barrel diameter, leaf offset, and pin length on-site before pulling the replacement. On the OEM question: genuine BFT hinges and rollers are well-built and compatible across their current catalog, but several quality aftermarket suppliers make equivalents from the same materials (galvanized steel bodies with sealed stainless pins) that run 25 – 40% less. We’ll quote both when the aftermarket option is genuinely equivalent, and we’ll tell you when it isn’t. Latch & Post is an independent gate service provider in Sacramento, not affiliated with BFT.

Signs Your BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing

  • The gate sags at the latch side. Hinge barrel wear opens up vertical play, which drops the free leaf by a quarter-inch or more. The latch striker then misaligns, and you’ll feel it catch or scrape even though the operator is still pushing fine.
  • A low grinding or metallic pop when the gate moves. BFT rollers run on sealed bearings, and once the seal fails – Sacramento’s fine, dry dust eventually wins that battle – the bearings develop flat spots. The gate still moves, but it rolls like a bad shopping cart wheel.
  • Visible rust staining or flaking at the hinge leaf. Even galvanized hinges give up after enough seasons. Rust expands, tightens the barrel, and accelerates wear. We see this most often on gates facing unshaded south and west exposures in Natomas and Elk Grove.
  • The gate binds partway through its arc. When roller bearings seize, the wheel stops rolling and starts sliding. The gate hesitates at a specific point in its travel, then jumps forward. The BFT operator compensates until the current draw trips its overload logic.
  • A rasping noise that changes with temperature. This is usually the roller wheel rubbing against the track plate or a dry hinge pin. It’s quieter on warm afternoons when the metal expands and loudest on cool Sacramento mornings.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A single BFT-compatible hinge replacement in Sacramento runs $95 – $145 installed. A pair of rollers runs $120 – $190. Replacing both hinges and both rollers on one gate leaf runs $270 – $420, and we quote the full-leaf job more often than not, because once a hinge barrel wears out on one side, the matching hinge across the leaf is typically within six months of the same failure.

The price includes the part, the labor, height and alignment correction on the leaf, and a load test with the operator connected. You see the written number before we touch anything – that’s a non-negotiable part of our Cedarwell Care Promise, not an option you have to ask for. Every BFT hinge and roller replacement is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if anything about the fit, the movement, or the alignment isn’t right within the year, we fix it on our own time and dime.

To break it down clearly:

  • Single BFT hinge, installed: $95 – $145
  • Roller pair (wheel and bracket), installed: $120 – $190
  • Full one-leaf kit (2 hinges + 2 rollers), installed: $270 – $420
  • Both leaves, full kit: $490 – $720

DIY or Call Us?

BFT hinges and rollers aren’t like changing a light fixture. The gate leaf is heavy, often 200 – 400 pounds, and once you unbolt a hinge, that weight wants to go somewhere. We’ve arrived at Sacramento homes where a well-intentioned owner had the gate propped on a jack stand, a cinder block, and a prayer. It’s not worth the crushed fingers or the cracked brick column.

There are a couple of things you can safely do before calling. Lubricate the hinge pins with a silicone or lithium spray and work the gate back and forth to check if the noise improves. Check the bolts at each hinge leaf with a wrench – but don’t loosen them, because lowering an unsecured leaf by hand is the quickest way to turn a $200 hinge job into a full gate rebuild.

If the sag, grinding, or binding persists, that’s mechanical wear, and it needs parts, not spray. Call (279) 266-8501. One of us – not a voicemail, a live person – answers around the clock, and we’ll get a technician out with the right BFT-compatible hardware.
